Edenhall, an abandoned hospital set in extensive, overgrown grounds

Created By Musselburgh Admin

Hidden out of sight from passers by lies the former Edenhall Hospital, a series of abandoned buildings slowly being claimed back by nature.

The main building is a beautiful, early 19th century manor formerly known as Pinkieburn House, which was built for the Lindsay family. When the last Lindsay died in 1915, the house was gifted to the Scottish branch of the British Red Cross and over the years took on several different names and uses, mainly tending to injured war veterans.

In 1953, now known as Edenhall Hospital, the house, its grounds and outbuildings were transferred to the NHS. It continued to provide services for 60 years until finally closing in 2013.

The site is accessible on foot from several points, and although a security company keeps watch from the main building, respectful visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, which includes the original stable block and gardeners cottage, as well as more modern additions, mainly in the form of ugly yet functional prefabs. Caution is advised. The terrain isn't always smooth and the area is poorly lit, but it's definitely worth a wander round, if you're brave enough!
