Householders in Inveresk are throwing their gardens open to the public over two days as part of Scotland’s Garden Scheme (SGS) this year.

The horticultural wonders include gardens at a Victorian villa, a gatehouse cottage and an eco house.

A large tiered garden can be viewed, as well as a garden surrounding the house of a coal mine manager.

A Japanese garden is also expected to be open for one day.

The delights of Inveresk Lodge Garden, which is run by the National Trust for Scotland, can be enjoyed.

Musselburgh’s allotments will be open within the circular trail, which passes a topiary hedge outside a cottage in Double Dykes.

A mix of large and small gardens, some wrapped round by high stone walls and others more exposed to the wind and relatively dry climate, will offer visitors many ideas to think over when they return home.

The Romans recognised the quality of the soil in this area when they settled here during the Antonine era between 140 and 165 AD, and some of the land may have been in continuous cultivation since then.

The gardens will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19.

Enthusiasts can visit on both days if they retain their village map and a sticky badge.

Catering will only be available on one day – if at all – and only on a bring-your-own-cup-or-mug basis.

Full clarity about the arrangements can be found by checking updated information on the Scotland’s Garden Scheme website just prior to the event.

Admission is £7 and children get free entry to the gardens.

Funds raised from the open days will support Live Music Now Scotland, which gives young artists the opportunity to perform at the start of their careers and enables high-quality live music to reach people throughout communities, especially those who wouldn’t normally have access to it.
